(AP) ? President Barack Obama wants Congress to help states rehire teachers and act on a key part of last year's jobs bill. He says the last thing the U.S. needs is to have fewer teachers in our schools.

Obama says in his radio and Internet address Saturday that many states have been squeezed by the economic recession and have been forced to lay off teachers ? about 250,000 across the nation.

Obama says Congress needs to act on part of last year's jobs bill that would prevent more layoffs and rehire more teachers who lost their jobs.

Republicans say Obama's policies stand in the way of a stronger economy. Minnesota congressman Erik Paulsen says House Republicans will push plans to boost domestic energy production and stop tax increases on small businesses.

Crowd Funding for Real Estate InvestingBy FortuneBuilders

Looking for a better and easier way to raise private money and visibility?

Real estate investing companies and solo investors have been hustling hard to hunt down and recruit private mortgage lenders while desperately trying to raise their visibility on the web to stand out from the crowd. Now there is another potentially far easier way to accomplish both at the same time?

The 3 main challenges those in real estate investing currently face in these efforts are:

  1. Trying to convince of the benefits of private lending and building trust at the same time
  2. Spreading budget too thin in too many directions, lowering saturation & effectiveness
  3. Trying to differentiate themselves from everyone else, and those with large budgets

The current trend and popularity of crowd funding offers investors a far easier way to raise money with fewer resources spent while capturing more of the limelight.

Drawing on crowd funding means being able to pool money from more parties which makes the investment and risk more palatable for lenders, while reaching those who already know they want ot lend in order to leap obstacles others face in trying to win trust. The beautiful thing is that the existing platforms for this also mean this can be done less expensively than direct mail, cold calling or other elaborate yet unproven internet marketing campaigns.

Where to tap into crowd funding?

  • Angel investor & VC sites
  • Crowd funding platforms like Kickstarter
  • Peer-2-peer lending sites

These sources all have massive databases of individuals actively seeking to loan their money, many of whom are very interested in real estate.

There can be some restrictions on how you raise money and how you ask for it but with a little creativity and innovation you could find this your very own mint for all the cash for investing in real estate you?ll ever need.

The best way to approach this and what has enabled other entrepreneurs to even raise 1,000% more than what they originally asked for is to utilize storytelling, present opportunities as causes and specific projects, enroll lenders in the whole experience so that they aren?t just getting a decent return on their money but feel like they are really a part of something.

Then boost awareness of your campaigns via blogs, social and press releases for viral attention and maximum participation and ROI.

Apple's war with Google heats up

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - When Apple Inc kicks off its annual conference for software developers on Monday, all the power players in the Apple universe will be on hand, save the one that is in many ways driving the agenda: Google Inc.

More than ever, the consumer electronics juggernaut finds itself in a pitched battle with the online search giant - in smartphones, cloud computing and the never-ending competition for the hearts and minds of the best software developers.

Apple on Monday is expected to announce its own mapping application, challenging the position of Google Maps as one of the most-valued features on the iPhone. It will unveil closer integration of its iPhone apps and iCloud storage service with all its devices, the latest riposte in its battle with Google's Android smartphone software.

It may promote the latest in Siri, the voice interface that the company thinks can continue to set the iPhone and the iPad apart from the Android pack.

And there will likely be a new line of Macintosh laptops too - underscoring the leverage that a full line of hardware products can bring to what is mainly a software war with Google.

Apple is looking to differentiate its mobile devices from Google's Android by further enticing consumers deeper into its app ecosystem, said Carolina Milanesi, analyst at Gartner Research.

"It's all about loyalty and basically leveraging the opportunity of selling more to them," she said. "I don't think the consumers in the mass market are necessarily tied into the Android ecosystem in the same way that consumers on the Apple side are."

Battling in many arenas, the rivals employ different weapons. Apple's vise-like grip on its ecosystem - with the closely managed app store and its seamless integration with the hardware - stands in sharp contrast to Google's free-for-all approach.

The open system approach, reminiscent of Microsoft Corp's hugely successful strategy of creating standard-setting software that runs on a variety of hardware, has allowed Android to capture the market lead in smartphones (albeit with nothing close to Apple's profit margins).

Android has also helped create several potent hardware rivals to Apple. Samsung Electronics' Android-driven Galaxy SIII is drawing favorable comparisons to iPhone and Amazon.com Inc's cheaper Kindle Fire is challenging Apple in tablets and digital content.

Apple's expected move to replace Google Maps with its own mapping application is a particularly dramatic example of how the rivalry between the companies has been evolving.

Google has invested huge sums in its mapping technology over the years, and about half of its map traffic now comes from iPhones and iPads. Among other things, the traffic from those devices reveals valuable location data that helps improve the mapping service and provides features like real-time traffic reports.

Apple has spent three years preparing to take mapping back. It has integrated technology from acquisitions such as 3D mapping company C3 Technologies, Canadian startup Poly9 Group and mapping service Placebase, said ISI analyst Brian Marshall.

"As Apple builds out its Siri service, they build out the iCloud infrastructure and more capability into its operating system, location data is going to become important," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu.

"This could help their advertising business too."

MULTI-PRONGED BATTLE

In what was seen as a pre-emptive move against Apple's upcoming maps service, Google on Wednesday showed off its own mapping capabilities, including soon-to-be-launched 3D features.

While Google executives avoided any comment on the possibility of being ousted as a default service on Apple devices, one executive said the integration with Google's search engine provides a mapping service that is far more useful than a product that simply uses a "geocoder.

Apple began to use its own geocoder - technology that uses geographic coordinates to create a digital map - for the Google-based maps on its smartphones late last year, a move that was seen as a precursor to Apple using its own map software.

Another software upgrade that fans and developers are hoping for is Siri, a popular voice-enabled personal assistant service that Google has yet to match.

The service could come out of its beta testing phase and show up on the iPad when Apple unveils iOS6 or the next version of its mobile operating software.

Siri, which has been plagued with connectivity and other issues, is still in beta test version.

Apple's global war on Google and Android in the courts is one sign of how seriously it is taking the potential threat. The consumer device giant is seeing limited success, though, in courtrooms for various patent infringement cases it has against Android manufacturers.

Apple said this week it is mulling a legal order to stop the U.S. launch of Samsung Galaxy S III phone later this month. Samsung is one of the biggest Android phone manufacturers.

In another of the many lawsuits worldwide pitting Apple against Motorola Mobility, now owned by Google, a federal judge canceled a scheduled trial as neither could prove damages. That decision particularly hurts Apple because the iPhone maker was seeking an injunction barring the sale of Android products, said Brian Love, a professor at Stanford Law School.

"The Android side is likely thrilled to simply have the case go away," Love said.

Apple declined to comment on the case.

MACBOOK REDESIGN IN THE WORKS

Where Apple has the upper hand is in its hardware - groundbreaking in design, vastly popular with consumers for its ease of use.

The redesigned MacBook laptops to hit the stage next week are expected to include high-definition screens and Intel Corp's Ivy Bridge cutting-edge processors. Some even expect the iPad's "retina" display to show up on the MacBook line.

This would be Apple's first big redesign of the MacBook Pro since mid-2009. With the new lineup, it hopes to fend off budding competition from rival manufacturers who are pushing a spate of new, thinner laptops called "Ultrabooks."

Windows 8, a new version of Microsoft's flagship operating system that runs on tablet computers as well as PCs, will bolster PC makers' ability to offer premier computers rivaling Apple's MacBook line.

Already, about 20 touch-enabled ultrabook designs with various styles of foldable, detachable or sliding keyboards running the new Windows 8 system are in the pipeline.

The MacBook line generated 13 percent, or about $5 billion, of Apple's fiscal second-quarter revenue. Unit sales of the aging lineup were up 7 percent from the previous year but were down 23 percent sequentially.

Whatever the case, Apple fans and partners can look forward to a fairly action-packed week.

"Apple is very serious about getting far in front of Windows 8 and Ultrabooks," said Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes. But "software and services will be the focus, with major enhancements to Maps, iCloud and Siri, which developers and users can take advantage of."

(AP) ? The European Central Bank has left its benchmark interest rate unchanged as it increases the pressure on eurozone leaders to tackle a government debt crisis that threatens the global economy.

The decision Wednesday by the bank's 23-member governing council left the refinancing rate at a record low 1 percent.

The bank is under pressure to stimulate a weakening economy of the 17 countries that use the euro with a rate cut. But Bank President Mario Draghi undermined any hopes of a cut by sticking to the bank's earlier forecast for a gradual recovery this year.

He said that growth "remains weak, with heightened uncertainty weighing on confidence and sentiment" and cited "downside risks" to growth.

Some investors had been expecting a rate cut and most of the world's stock markets had moved higher earlier in the day in expectation. However, while most of the world's share indexes moved lower following the rate decision, they had managed to hold on to some of their early gains.

The eurozone faces trouble on several fronts. Spain is struggling to bail out banks that made reckless loans during a real estate boom and are now suffering mounting losses. Greece, already rescued by expensive bailout loans from the other countries, faces elections June 17 that could result in rejection of the strict cutbacks demanded under its bailout. That could lead to a chaotic exit from the euro.

Trouble in one place could spread to other countries in the form of investors selling assets and bank customers withdrawing deposits for fear banks will collapse or their savings will be redenominated in a new currency after euro exit. Finance ministers from the Western industrial countries held a conference call Tuesday to discuss the eurozone crisis.

A renewed financial crisis in Europe could hurt growth in the United States and Asia by creating losses and fear among banks, which are key to the functioning of the global economy, and by hurting trade.

Some of the eurozone's problems, however, were beyond the reach of central bank action such as rate cuts or loans to banks. The ECB has already taken strong action to stimulate credit and borrowing by cutting rates to record lows and loaning ?1 trillion in emergency credit to banks.

Borrowing has yet to pick up, Draghi said Wednesday, with some parts of the European financial system have plenty of liquidity, or access to borrowing and cash by banks, while others don't, he said. That was not the fault of the central bank, he said. The ECB has flooded banks with ?1 trillion in cheap loans, yet credit and lending remain weak as businesses see no reason to borrow.

"There is plenty of liquidity in some parts... and shortages in other areas," he said. "Some of these problems in the euro area have nothing to do with monetary policy. "

He said real interest rates were already so low as to be negative in inflation adjusted terms, given an inflation rate of 2.4 percent. He left the door open for more central bank action if things got worse, saying "we'll monitor closely all the developments and we'll stand ready to act."

Draghi told European politicians in Brussels last week that the euro's basic setup is "unsustainable" and urged them to sketch out a long-term vision for strengthening the euro's basic institutions over the next few years.

He repeated that call Wednesday, in response to a question about his expectations for a June 28-29 European Union summit. "What we all expect is a clarification of this vision, a path toward this objective with all the conditions that have to be satisfied to achieve this objective."

While it tries to squeeze more effort from government, the ECB is facing a weakening economy in the 17 countries that use the euro. Surveys of economic activity and business confidence have pointed sharply down, suggesting that the mild contraction of 0.3 percent predicted by the European Commission will turn out to be worse. That would argue for lower interest rates that would in theory make borrowing cheaper for businesses so they could expand and hire.

The measures to be discussed at the summit at the end of June could include further steps to increase growth, moves toward more control over national government's spending and some form of shared borrowing to reduce the chance that one country would default.

Most of those steps would take years to implement and several are highly controversial. Germany has resisted common borrowing through so-called eurobonds, afraid spendthrift countries would overborrow using its stronger credit rating. A plan for stronger control of countries finances might ease that objection, however.

Officials from the European Union's executive, the Commission, unveiled their legislative proposals earlier Wednesday designed to strengthen the eurozone's ability to restructure troubled banks. However Wednesday's proposals, not expected to come into power until 2018, fall short of the full banking union pushed for by some European officials.

Apple snags broader design patent for the MacBook Air's wedge shape

It's not the first design patent related to the MacBook Air that Apple has received, but the one it managed to obtain from the USPTO earlier this week is certainly the broadest to date. As explained by The Verge, this one is intended to cover the laptop's distinctive wedge shape, or what's indicated by the solid lines in the illustrations included with the patent. That doesn't include things like the hinge, rear or sides of the device, but it would appear to give Apple some fairly solid ground to stand on should it choose to go after other laptop manufacturers using a "substantially similar" wedge shape (regardless of any other differences). Those interested can examine the full patent at the link below.

Venus was Just the Beginning: The Science of Planetary Transits

Are you sick of reading about the transit of Venus this year? Yes? Me too. But the fact is that when astrophysical objects move between us and something else, like the convenient blaze of a star, there is an extraordinary amount that can be learned. I won?t go far into the delights of a venusian transit here, since so much has already been written about both the historical viewing and this year?s viewing (don?t stare directly at the Sun for goodness sake), except to say that in case you?re curious here?s a small listing of some Venus transits of the past, present, and future (thanks to NASA):

Transits of Venus: 1601-2400 Date Universal Separation Time (Sun and Venus) 1631 Dec 07 05:19 940" 1639 Dec 04 18:25 522" 1761 Jun 06 05:19 573" 1769 Jun 03 22:25 608" 1874 Dec 09 04:05 832" 1882 Dec 06 17:06 634" 2004 Jun 08 08:19 627" 2012 Jun 06 01:28 553" 2117 Dec 11 02:48 724" 2125 Dec 08 16:01 733" 2247 Jun 11 11:30 693" 2255 Jun 09 04:36 492" 2360 Dec 13 01:40 628" 2368 Dec 10 14:43 835"

You?ll note a couple of things in this table. First, as widely promised, the upcoming transit on June 5th/6th is indeed the last one for us Earth-dwellers until December 11th 2117, so keep taking those antioxidants if you want to catch it again. Next is the list of visual Sun-Venus separations in the 3rd column, these are measured in seconds of arc (precisely 1/3600 th of a degree) and refer to the distance between the center of the solar disk and the closest point Venus gets to that center. None of them are zero (which would indicate a transit across the solar center), and that?s because neither Venus or the Earth orbit the Sun in exactly the same plane as its equator. In fact we?re relatively lucky, this June 2012 transit is among the closer ones that can occur. Now if you?re very astute, or just plain compulsive, you?ll also see that the recurrence interval of transits follows a pattern ? they?re always separated by either roughly 8 years, 121 years, or 105 years. So it seems good fortune is indeed with us, this is only the sixth transit since the invention of the telescope, and comes a mere 8 years after the last one.

As nifty as this is, the really exciting aspect of transits are coming today from the study of exoplanets. For example, NASA?s space telescope Kepler is designed to spot the minuscule eclipses of planets transiting stars that are thousands of light years from us. Using this technique it has unveiled more than 2,300 good candidate exoplanets ? helping us transform our understanding of the abundance of exoplanets in the Milky Way galaxy. These transits are the result of a chance geometric alignment that increases in probability the smaller the planetary orbit and the larger the star, but the real treasure comes from the details of every transit event ? the so-called ?lightcurves? that trace the brightness of a star as time goes by. This great animation (NASA, Kepler) shows the lightcurve (wait a few seconds) as a gas giant planet orbits its parent star and transits.

Lest this look too easy, note that the dips in light are shown greatly exaggerated. A Jupiter-sized planet and a Sun-like star will result in a roughly 1% transit dip, and an Earth-sized planet produces a mere 0.008% dip. Nonetheless, an instrument like Kepler can reach this level of precision if it detects enough transit events to construct a statistical ?wrap?,? adding all the data together. You?ll also note in the animation that there is a hint of the light reflected by the giant planet itself, and even a little dip as the planet is eclipsed by the star. Such extraordinarily fine detail can indeed be seen, here for example in Kepler?s measurement of the giant planet HAT-P-7.

The HAT-P-7 stacked light curve from Kepler (Credit: Borucki et al. 2009)

There?s an awful lot going on in these lightcurves. The rounded shape of the transits is a consequence of the variation in brightness across the stellar disk (dimmer towards the edges due to the foggy opaqueness of a star?s outer atmosphere). Their depth is a direct measure of the relative size of planet and star, and their width is governed by the path taken across the stellar disk (which, like Venus, is typically not across the equator), as well as that disk?s size, and the orbital speed. If there were planetary rings, or moons, these too might show up as fine details in the shape and timing of the lightcurves.

Getting a handle on the physical diameter of an exoplanet is a huge deal ? armed with this, and an estimate of its mass (from the use of spectroscopic data measuring its gravitational pull on the star), we can begin to evaluate the actual internal composition of another world. I discussed this in some detail for the case of Kepler-22b a while ago.

But this is the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Clever use of transits has now enabled astronomers to not only make the first atmospheric temperature maps of a number of giant worlds, and some not-quite-so-giant worlds, but to also detect some of their atmospheric constituents. During a transit the starlight shines through the partially transparent outer layers of a planet?s atmosphere. Atoms and molecules in the atmosphere can leave an imprint in the spectrum of that light, selectively plucking photons out at very specific wavelengths. The result? We have now seen compounds like sodium, oxygen, carbon, methane, and even water lurking in the high altitude regions of a handful of large exoplanets. Eventually this technique may yield the first measurements of the atmospheric contents of an Earth-sized planet, something that the James Webb Space Telescope might be able to do for a couple of nearby systems.

Before we reach that breakthrough though, there is another extremely clever use of transits that reveals some truly unexpected qualities of exoplanetary systems. It?s a wee bit technical, but the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect dates back to the 1920?s through its application to eclipsing binary stars. For planetary transits the idea goes like this: stars rotate, and so the light we gather from a star is a mix of photons that have come from the side of the star rotating away from us (which redshifts them to longer wavelengths), and photons coming from the side rotating towards us (blueshifted to shorter wavelengths). So any specific spectral feature is smeared out, or broadened, due to this ? we always see that mix of photons.

But if a transiting planet now sails across the disk of the star it will sometimes block more of the redshifted photons and sometimes more of the blueshifted photons ? depending on its path across the sky. The two slides here are from a class I teach at Columbia University, and summarize the impact of this varying blockage of light.

In a nutshell, if you measure the spectrum of the starlight simultaneously with a transit you will find it shifting redder and bluer with a very specific dependence on the actual geometry of the path the transiting planet takes. It can appear as if the velocity wobble of the star due to the planet?s gravity is itself somewhat askew.

The truly wonderful thing about this is that we now have a way to measure the orientation of the planet?s orbit in relation to the spin-axis of the star. When you consider that we cannot see anything except the light coming from the star as a tiny point on the sky, to be able to dissect the orbital architecture of another solar system to this level of detail is simply quite astonishing.

And what have we discovered? Well, many of these planets orbit in planes closely aligned with the equator of the stars, and in the same direction as the stellar spin, much like our own solar system. But some don?t; some crazy, ditzy, unexpected worlds actually orbit in the opposite direction altogether! In fact, it appears that as many as 20% of closely-orbiting, hot Jupiter-type planets are in retrograde orbits.

Some planets have flipped (Credit: ESO, A. C. Cameron)

This is a big deal. The consensus opinion is that all planets forming from the disks of gas and dust surrounding young stars should initially be orbiting in the same sense as the rotation of the entire system. This means that something funky is happening in certain cases to fling these worlds into orbits that basically ?flip? into retrograde states.

It?s a fascinating, and unexpected, twist to the nature of planetary orbital architectures, that reveals a great degree of dynamical instability and change in the history of many objects. So, if you?re lucky enough to catch the last transit of Venus in our lifetimes, remember that this is just the beginning ? transits can reveal planetary sizes, rings, moons, compositions, temperatures, atmospheric contents, orbital arrangements, and will likely bring us many more delights long before Venus slides across our Sun?s face again.

Possible new Mac Pro part numbers tip up, WWDC attendees raise eyebrows

We're still unsure as to whether or not Apple's rumored Mac update smorgasbord will come to pass at WWDC, but if any of it pans out, it looks to be the almost mythological Mac Pro update. A trio of model numbers for a "K5BPLUS" have popped up that 9to5 Mac claims are the base, mid-range and high-end configurations for the long-sought workstations. The part numbers don't include details, though talk of similar pricing to what we know today would point to Intel's Xeon E5-2600 (itself a long story) taking the reins as the processor. If there's any truth to the talk, the new Mac Pro could be ready to sell just as WWDC kicks off next week -- a mention supported by rumors of Apple recalling what little Mac Pro stock it keeps at retail stores. Not that a few extra days would matter, knowing how long prospective buyers have had to wait.

Update: Just when we thought we were clear, another Apple laptop spec sheet of unknown provenance has appeared. Posted by 9to5 Mac (2), it suggests a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a 2560x1600 Retina display, 16GB of 1,600MHz DDR3 SDRAM plus an AMD Radeon HD 7770M graphics core with 2GB of RAM and auto switching to integrated Intel video. Droolworthy bullet points to be sure, but until we have more concrete evidence prospective upgraders should keep their credit cards set to stun.

Engineers Use Reflected Light to Illuminate the Mystery of Ear Infections

Professor Stephen Boppart

Professor Stephen Boppart led a team that developed a new medical imaging device that can see behind the eardrum, the first in a planned suite of devices.

When a person suffers from chronic ear infections the culprit may be a film of bacteria or other microorganisms that builds up behind the eardrum, not unlike dental plaque on unbrushed teeth. Antibiotics are not always effective against this so-called biofilm, so it helps doctors greatly to know whether it is present before prescribing a course of treatment. Whereas conventional scopes aren?t able to see beyond the surface of the eardrum, a team of researchers from the University of Illinois has developed a new tool that can shed some light on the situation.

The device uses a non-invasive imaging system called optical coherence tomography (OCT) to collect high-resolution, three-dimensional tissue images from beams of light sent into the ear canal. The system can scan through the eardrum to any biofilm behind it. The researchers, who liken the process to ultrasound imaging that uses light instead of sonic waves, described their work last week in the online Early Edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The light scatters and reflects from the tympanic membrane?which separates the external ear from the middle ear?as well as any biofilm that might be behind the membrane. The researchers measure this reflection to determine whether a biofilm is present as well as its thickness and position against the eardrum.

University of Illinois researchers tested a prototype of a new device that can see biofilms behind the eardrum to better diagnose and treat chronic ear infections.

The research team, led by University of Illinois electrical and computer engineering professor Stephen Boppart, tested their ear OCT device at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill. There they scanned patients with diagnosed chronic ear infections, as well as patients with normal ears. The device identified biofilms in all patients with chronic infections, while none of the normal ears showed evidence of biofilms, according to the researchers.

A closer study of ear infections, the most common conditions that pediatricians treat, could lead to a better understanding of the relationship between biofilms and hearing loss. Boppart and his team also plan to adapt their OCT technique to other areas of medicine with the hope that such imaging technology can be useful in diagnosing health problems originating in the eyes, mouth, nose or skin.

College and the Computer Game ?Addiction? | Davis Life Magazine

04. Jun, 2012

Last year as a freshman at UC Davis, I became aware of how prominent computer and video games were in a student?s everyday life. ?I was surprised to find while walking through my dormitory hall, peeking into rooms that had their doors open in welcome, that many of my friends were all glued to their computer screens, clicking away on their mouse ferociously. It was like this for most of the day. When my floor mates weren?t out and about in the halls, I would find them gaming away in their rooms. What is it about these games that makes them so addicting, even to working adults? But taking a look at students, how are they able to balance academia with this virtual activity?

Even now that I am no longer in the dorms, computer games are still subject of conversation, and I know many individuals that continue to play and incorporate it into their schedule practically every day. My friends talk about them, post about them on Facebook, and plan out when they would all go online to play. Even my sister and her boyfriend, both full time workers, find time in their day to play for a bit. Most recently, a game called Diablo 3 was released and created a frenzy among gamers. I?ll admit that I used to play the former Diablo 2 back in high school, so I bought the new one. Many of my friends around me bought the game too and started playing non-stop, for hours into the night. I even gave three of my friends ?guest passes? which gave you a free trial of the game, which in turn hooked them in and led them into buying the full version of the game only a few days later. The game is fun, but how is it that games become so addicting, individuals feel the need to play so much? Although I bought the game, I don?t play it nearly as religiously as others do, which got me wondering: What is it about certain games that makes them so addicting? And how are students managing to play so much when they have school to worry about?

Games that have gained much popularity among college students

Diablo 3 is only one game among many popular ones being played. Ask students what games they currently play, and they will probably respond with titles such as League of Legends (LoL), Heroes of Newerth (HoN), or World of Warcraft (WoW).? Knowing quite a few gamers myself, I asked them why they liked to play their game so much, and what makes them want to play on a daily basis? On playing Diablo 3, one student said ??because the game play is really fun and it?s also fun to improve your character every time you play.? Another said they liked that it was constantly challenging, and that it has endless potential when it comes to characters and items. ?When I asked why players of League of Legends opted to play so much, I was told that it?s fun because it ?involves a lot of strategy? and that there is a ?competitive side to it?. Many students I asked liked the thrill of winning a game against other players, which makes them want to continue playing. One individual finds fun in being on a team with friends, competing against other teams, and in making ?kills?. He also said that losing a game only made him want to play more. All of the games have a competitive theme that makes it very enjoyable for the players.

When I discussed with them their academic life as a result of such constant game play, it was no surprise that in the beginning, many struggled to keep a balance between playing and keeping up with their school work. The game itself is extremely alluring, and according to one student, he often feels ?peer pressured? to play by his friends.? Although all the individuals I spoke with indeed had trouble keeping a balance between gaming and academics initially, over time they found a way to continue playing without sacrificing their grades. Some use the game as an incentive to complete all their schoolwork, while others got a wakeup call when they ended up on academic probation from playing too much. One student said ?I balance it by reminding myself that it is only a game and there is more important stuff to do, because at the end of the day, it?s not really going to get you anywhere no matter how good you are at it.? Every individual said that they don?t really struggle maintaining their grades, and that they have a happy medium.

Although it?s quite common for college students to get addicted to computer games, perhaps gaming can be a harmless recreational activity after all. Enjoying a game doesn?t have to be a bad thing, as long as your social and academic life isn?t being affected. Too much of a good thing is bad in the long run, and as long as students don?t play excessively, it makes sense why so many students enjoy playing so much.

If you?re interested in trying out one of these games, League of Legends can be played for free, while the others require payment. As long as one doesn?t get carried away, I don?t see anything wrong with playing ?for enjoyment!

Gardening 101 ? Down-Home South Jersey

Or: ?How two people who don?t know much about gardening manage to plan, plant, weed (occasionally), mostly ignore, and still reap the benefits of their family garden!

Last year at the end of the growing season, I wrote a post on 7 lessons learned from the garden. Wow, that was a pretty good post! Sure wish I had re-read it before planting this year ;) ?I think we planted too many zucchini plants. ?Again. ?Anyway?

This year?s garden is in the ground and growing like crazy. ?It needs to be weeded (already), but you can see from the photo that we increased its size from 10 by 10 feet to 13 by 13 feet to accomodate our love of tomatoes. ?Plus, I want to have extras for the food swap this summer.

If you?ve never planted a family garden before, I heartily encourage you to do so. ?This garden was planted for under $30 ? the cost of plants, that fancy trellis my husband wanted to try for the cucumbers, and the tomato cages. ?I estimate that we will easily harvest $150 or more in produce! ?That?s huge savings at the grocery store (and more money to buy ice cream).

Zucchini is planted at the edge of the garden to allow for spreading.

And as you can see, a garden doesn?t have to be pretty or fancy to get the job done.

So where do you start? ?As with many things in life, having a plan is a good idea. My husband usually sketches something out on a piece of scrap paper, with circles where the plants will be. ?We decide what we want to grow, how many plants we need, and where they should be planted. ?Vegetables like zucchini and cucumbers tend to spread, so we put them on the edges of the plot.

Next comes preparing the soil. ?This job belongs to my husband. ?He takes new soil from our composter and works it into the garden with the rototiller attachment on his weed wacker. ?If you don?t have a rototiller, a hoe and a little effort works just fine. ?As for the composter, it?s a worthwhile investment. ?We got ours for $25 several years ago, and now we are getting beautiful soil from the grass clippings, weeds, and coffee grounds that we put in it!

Our composter takes up very little space, yet provides lovely organic soil for our garden.

After the soil is prepared, my husband uses markers to lay out where he will plant our veggies.? This year he got a little silly.? Here is the result:

Photo credit: J. MalmeYes, he used beer bottles to plan our garden.? It sure takes the concept of a beer garden to a whole new level!? You could easily use stones, old pots, or whatever you have on hand.

The last step is actually planting your garden.? Get the kids involved and make an afternoon of it.? They will love getting dirty, and you?ll be happy for the help!

After your garden is planted, that?s when the fun really begins.? Don?t forget about weeding (a few times per week) and watering (as needed).? I know weeding is a pain, but it?s good exercise.? Keep reminding yourself, ?I?m burning calories, I?m getting in shape.?

Before you know it, you will have delicious vegetables for your summer table plus lots more to share.? You?ll feel good about saving money, and you will enjoy the healthy benefits of eating organic veggies!

Then when you are feeling brave, you can tackle a little herb garden.? But we?ll save that for another post!

Do you have a garden this year?? What are you growing?? Please share links to your garden photos below.
