96% First Position

All Critics (46) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (44) | Rotten (2)

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.

It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.

Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.

Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.

It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.

The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.

It's a wealth of material at odds with a scant running time and shallow focus.

When it's over, you won't remember so much about who won and who lost. Instead, what remains is the expression on a young dancer's face, reflected in a mirror: showing the joy of being in love with what you do.

What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.

It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.

For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.

It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.

Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.

Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.

The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.

These kids are proud of their tights.

Kargman follows the pre-established pattern of documentaries following competitions from crosswords to spelling bees, but the format works and she's found six kids ranging in age from 9 to 16 who are truly involving.

International Animal Welfare Systems Adopted

News

25 May 2012

GLOBAL - At the World Organisation for Animal Health's (OIE) 80th General Session, OIE Delegates adopted new guiding principles on animal welfare relating to livestock production systems and a new chapter on the welfare of cattle bred for meat production.

?In 2011 the Delegates of the OIE did not reach a consensus on a text on animal welfare of broiler chickens and this year?s consensus on livestock is a huge step forward. This is a historical event that opens way to the adoption of animal welfare standards of other farm animal production,? OIE Director General said.

The new adopted texts provide for criteria and indicators to measure the welfare beef cattle, nutritious quality of feed, supplementary lighting for cattle that do not have access to natural light, bedding and many other aspects of cattle breeding conditions.

OIE published the first international standards on the welfare of animals in 2005, addressing the transport of animals by land, sea and air, slaughter of animals for consumption and killing of animals for disease control, and then on welfare of laboratory animals and stray dog population control.

Other key decisions of the World Assembly of Delegates this week include new texts on the responsible use of antibiotics in animals for consumption purposes.

Whole Grains Cut Colorectal Cancer Risk

In the British Medical Journal article published in 2011, researchers analyzed several previous studies and determined that whole grains reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. People enjoying three servings of whole grains a day ? that?s ? cup of oatmeal, a slice of good bread, or a ? cup of brown rice ? also enjoy a 17% reduction in risk of the development of colon cancer.

Whole grain is high in fiber, which helps to move the digestive process along and sweep any carcinogens out of the colon quicker. In addition, fiber molecules are excellent at binding carcinogens and hormones in food that would otherwise be absorbed if the grain were processed and the beneficial fiber removed.

Whole grains are also excellent sources of non-inflamatory protein, healthy omega-3 fats and complex carbohydrates. A skimpy salad feels like a full-on dinner when it?s served over rice or wrapped into a multi-grain tortilla. So find some yummy whole grain foods that you enjoy and live it up with that happy, healthy colon.

Banning Anonymous Speech: Reality Mimics April Fool's Gag ? New ...

Really, who?d a thunk it? On April 1st I went live with a gag about Joe Lieberman proposing to ban anonymous speech on the Internet. I used a new blog: McIntyre v. Ohio to run it anonymously. Lots of fun was had, and I did a deconstruction of the hoax the day after, but no journalists were actually taken in.

But were real life politicians actually suckered into it? Or did they come up with this idea on his own?

Two bills ?now pending in the New York State Senate and Assembly propose to ban anonymous speech. Yes, this would be in flagrant disregard of prior constitutional case law on the First Amendment. And that primary case is McIntyre v. Ohio for which my ?other blog? is named.

The legislation ? conjured due to concerns over cyber-bullying ? would require anyone with a website:

?upon request remove any comments posted on his or her web site by an anonymous poster unless such anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post and confirms that his or her IP address, legal name, and home address are accurate.? By ?web site,? the bill means just what it seems to: Any New York-based website, including ?social networks, blogs forums, message boards or any other discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages.?

The bills will go nowhere, of course, because the First Amendment allows anonymous speech. For a good read on the long and deep history of such speech in the United States, read the concurring opinion of Justice Clarence Thomas in McIntyre.

The Gold & Silver Mining Stocks: An Investment Whose Time Has ...

Over the last several years, gold and silver mining stocks have underperformed their underlying metals by a fairly wide margin, much to the chagrin of those who have used the mining stocks as their primary precious metals exposure.? However, all things are cyclical and there is very strong evidence to believe that this underperformance could be about to reverse strongly.

When looking at the ratio between gold and the XAU (gold & silver mining company index) over the past 28 years, one will find that the average ratio between the two had been about 4.? So, where is it today???? As I write this, it is currently over 10!? Let me try and translate how egregious the current ratio of 10 is as best I can:? If the XAU was currently trading at its average ratio to gold of 4, the price of the index would now be 150% higher than where it currently is!? Said another way, instead of trading at $164, the XAU should be priced at $410. ?Let?s look at another example:? It would be like the S&P 500 currently trading with a PE of about 5.75 instead of the current 14.5 level.? In terms of price, the S&P 500 would be currently at $552 instead of its current value of $1,400 with the same level of earnings that it has today.?? I hope that this helps you understand how terribly cheap the gold/silver mining stocks truly are.

This is occurring at the same time that gold has not even broken its downtrend from 2008 and sentiment in the precious metals arena is at multi-year lows (actually an extremely bullish contrary indicator).? There are a number of reasons that the gold/silver mining stocks are as cheap as they are some of them have a little validity, but I believe that the primary culprit to what has caused the dislocation to be so large is, in my opinion, based upon hedge funds going long gold while shorting the gold/silver mining stocks.? From some sources that I have discussed this with, there appears to have been quite a large implementation of this trade across the industry in the past few years, which obviously benefits gold, while putting pressure on the mining stocks.? With the ratio of gold/XAU hitting such extremes in recent days and the fact that gold appears to have bottomed, there is a strong argument that the hedge fund trade could be unwound fairly aggressively and that would mean big upside for gold/silver mining shares.

Every major dislocation in the market represents opportunity and this one appears to be no different.? ?Nobody can time the markets, nor can anyone exactly know why such market dislocations occur, but it sure looks as though the gold/silver mining stocks could be poised for quite a snap-back rally in the months ahead.? Of course, as with all investing, the risks are certainly high there are never any guarantees, but investing is about being able to quantify risk properly and the risk in the miners appears to be quite a lot more upside from here than downside.

Jay-Z Takes Off Studio Time For Blue Ivy Time

'I just wanna enjoy those moments for a bit and I'm sure that feeling of music will come back to me,' Jay-Z tells MTV News of his daughter.
By Rob Markman

<P><b>PHILADELPHIA</b> &#8212; These days, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jay_z/artist.jhtml">Jay-Z</a> would rather rock the cradle than rock the mic. After the birth of he and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a>'s daughter <a href="/news/articles/1676906/beyonce-jay-z-baby-born-ivy-blue.jhtml">Blue Ivy</a>, Hov figured that he'd be so inspired by fatherhood that he'd be locked in the studio pouring his heart out. But fate has more immediate plans for the God MC, at least for the time being.</P><P>"I thought that I would after my daughter was born. I thought I would be more inspired with all the new feelings and everything that I'd have to write about, but it really happened the other way," Big Poppa Hov told MTV News told in Philadelphia following a press conference where he announced his two-day Made in America music festival. "I just really wanna hang out with her. I just wanna enjoy those moments for a bit and I'm sure that feeling of music will come back to me."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Jay-Z More Into Blue Ivy Than Music, At The Moment" id="vid:768866" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Jigga fans shouldn't worry though, when he does return to the booth, Jay will have a ton to rap about. Just days after baby Blue was born, Hov released "Glory," a track dedicated to his daughter. Not only did he rhyme of his innermost feelings, Jay also featured a sampling of Blue Ivy's first cries on the Pharrell Williams-produced track.</P><P>"A younger, smarter, faster me/ Saw a pinch of Hov, a whole glass of B," the one-time hustler rapped about his first born.</P><P>Long-time Jay fans shouldn't be too surprised by the rapper's intimate soul-bearing, he's been doing it since his 1996 debut album <I>Reasonable Doubt.</i></P><P>"My music has always been like that, if you listen to 'Glory' and you listen to 'Regrets,' which was on my first album, side by side, it's exploring the same sort of emotions," he insists. "It's just one deals with my mom, one deals with my daughter."</P><P>On "Regrets," a younger, much darker Jay addressed the ills of his former street life, but he framed his feelings within the confines of his mother's teachings. "You used to hold me, told me that I was the best/ Anything in this world I want, I could possess/ All that made me want is all that I could get/ In order to survive gotta learn to live with regrets," he spit on the song's heartfelt hook.</P><P>"My music has always been filled with those sort of emotions," he reasoned.</P><P><center><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></center></p>
