Heineken to launch two new beers in key U.S. market

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Heineken NV is launching two new beers -- Amstel Wheat and Tecate Michelada -- in the United States next month, as the Dutch brewer works to improve its business in the key U.S. market.

The new beers arrive as the world's No. 3 beer maker, based in the Netherlands, aims to rely less on Europe, where beer drinking is expected to remain sluggish as the economy continues to struggle.

In recent years, many beer drinkers have switched to wine and spirits, as distilleries unleashed a flood of new products. Beer makers have not been as innovative, and Heineken not as innovative as other brewers, said Lesya Lysyj, Heineken USA's chief marketing officer, in an interview.

"We've been an under-innovator in an under-innovated category," Lysyj said. "Our business was not on a growth trajectory over the last several years."

But Heineken was not alone.

Overall, brewers sold 205.8 million barrels of beer in the United States in 2011, a decline of 1.5 percent, according to Beer Marketer's Insights. That marked the third straight year of declines, though sales in some other European markets, such as Britain, have been even weaker, said Benj Steinman, editor of the trade publication.

Yet Steinman said it looks like 2012 could be flat or slightly up.

Amstel Wheat will be sold in bottles in the Northeast, Chicago and Minneapolis, after a year-long test of the beer on draught. It is the brand's first U.S. line extension in more than a decade.

As for Tecate, a Mexican beer Heineken acquired through its 2010 purchase of Femsa's beer business, the new product will be the first canned, ready-to-drink michelada sold in the United States. A michelada is a beer cocktail popular in Mexico that combines beer with lime, salt, spices and hot sauce.

The new product will be available throughout the western and central regions of the United States.

After years of declining U.S. sales, Heineken is now seeing sales grow, Lysyj said, helped by a greater focus on marketing its flagship brand.

Heineken also has its hands full with a takeover battle in Southeast Asia that for the last six weeks has pitted the Netherlands-based brewer against Thai Beverage for control of Tiger beer maker Asia Pacific Breweries . Munich, Germany August 26 2012: Personalized antiplatelet treatment leads to better outcomes than standard antiplatelet treatment in patients undergoing coronary stent implantation, according to results from the MADONNA study presented at ESC Congress 2012. The findings were presented by Dr Jolanta Siller-Matula from Medical University of Vienna.

Standard antiplatelet treatment in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) consists of a dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and an ADP receptor inhibitor such as clopidogrel.

But measurements of platelet aggregation in clopidogrel treated patients indicate that one patient in four is a non-responder to the drug. Such non-responsiveness is attributed to clopidogrel's extensive hepatic metabolism, polymorphisms of metabolising enzymes and drug-drug interactions, with additional contributions coming from clinical variables such as diabetes, body mass index, acute coronary syndrome, ejection fraction and renal failure. Multiple studies have demonstrated a clear association between non-responsiveness to clopidogrel and adverse clinical events. The strongest relationship was found between poor clopidogrel response and short term events, particularly stent thrombosis.

Personalized antiplatelet treatment involves choosing a therapy based on the results of platelet function testing, a measurement which shows how effective an antiplatelet drug such as clopidogrel is at inhibiting platelet aggregation. Non-responders to the drug can be given a higher dose of clopidogrel or an alternate antiplatelet therapy such as the more potent platelet inhibitors prasugrel or ticagrelor. Personalized antiplatelet treatment only in clopidogrel non-responders would be a therapeutic strategy reaching two goals: increase of clinical efficacy only in patients who are at increased risk for ischemic events without exposing patients with a proper clopidogrel response to bleedings with use of very potent platelet antagonists.

In the MADONNA study (Multiple electrode Aggregometry in patients receiving Dual antiplatelet therapy tO guide treatmeNt with Novel platelet Antagonists), Austrian investigators led by Dr Jolanta Siller-Matula from the Medical University of Vienna and Professor Gnter Christ from Kaiser Franz Josef Hospital in Vienna, investigated whether individualized treatment with platelet inhibitors according to the results of whole blood aggregometry improves clinical outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

A total of 798 patients underwent platelet testing with whole blood aggregometry using the multiple electrode aggregometry (MEA) technique, which allowed patients to be classified as clopidogrel responders or non-responders. Patients were then allocated to the guided group or the non-guided group. In the guided group (n=403) clopidogrel non-responders (26%) received up to four loading doses of clopidogrel or after prasugrel became available, the more potent platelet inhibitor prasugrel. In the non-guided group (n=395) clopidogrel non-responders (25%) were further treated with the standard treatment consisting of clopidogrel and aspirin.

Results showed that patients in the non-guided group were at a 7.9-fold higher risk to develop stent thrombosis compared to the patients in the guided group (1.9% versus 0.2%; p=0.027). Furthermore acute coronary syndrome occurred in 0% of patients in the guided group versus 2.5% in the non-guided group (p=0.001). There were no differences between the two groups in the rates of cardiac death or major bleeding.

"Introducing clopidogrel testing into clinical practice might be feasible: it involves a blood sample and takes ten minutes to get a result," said Dr Siller-Matula, first author of the study. "Providing individualized treatment based on the results of MEA instead of using novel antiplatelet drugs in each patient would save costs of drug therapy of about 410 per patient each year. As individualized antiplatelet therapy seems to be cost-effective, it might be of interest to health authorities."

"Physicians would never adjust doses of antihypertensive drugs without knowing blood pressures; statins, without knowing cholesterol levels; or antidiabetic drugs without knowing the HbA1C levels," she added. "So why are we still treating our patients with platelet inhibitors without being aware of levels of platelet inhibition?"

Apple judgment aftershocks: An unforeseen winner emerges

There were already signs that Microsoft?s (MSFT) Windows Phone app market might be a bit more lively than expected before Apple?s (AAPL) big patent win over Samsung (005930). Now, the threat of U.S. handset sales injunctions and possible new litigation against HTC (2498), Sony (SNE), LG?(066570) and other Android vendors could give Windows Phone some extra oomph.

In a recent Vision Mobile study, 37% of the app developers polled were currently using Microsoft?s mobile platform. This was well below Android at 76% and iOS at 66%, but it already tops BlackBerry OS at 34%.

Implausibly, 57% of developers said they were planning to adopt Windows Phone in the future.

Windows Phone crossed the 100,000 app threshold in June 2012. The number lags far behind the iOS App Store, which now tops 700,000. But Windows Phone hit the 100,000 mark in 20 months ? four months faster than Android and four months slower than iOS. That isn?t half bad.

Anecdotally, several app developers have recently indicated they are interested in the Windows Phone platform. ?Doodle Jump? developer Igor Pusenjak mentioned to us during an interview last week that he is intrigued.

Will the early fascination actually translate to tangible developer support? That depends largely on Windows Phone sales and how many buyers actually begin paying for apps. But the recent litigation drama may have an impact if Apple manages to get injunctions slapped on Samsung smartphones.

Right now, Apple is demanding a ban on no fewer than eight different Samsung Galaxy variants. If those injunctions are granted ? and if Apple starts gunning for other Android vendors ? Windows Phone handset sales prospects could improve dramatically.

One factor here is the long-simmering developer frustration regarding Android. Many app developers we have interviewed over the past three months have been very vocal about their negative views on the Android app market, though none want to air their grievances in public.

Android is the No.1 smartphone hardware platform globally and in North America, but few app developers volunteer to get quoted about how they really feel about it as an app platform. None seem very happy. Trying to charge for Android apps is widely viewed as futile, and many regard the fragmentation and support challenges as daunting.

Windows Phone still faces a veritable mountain to climb as a mobile operating system, but the platform?s odds are a little bit better following a series of BlackBerry 10 delays and the new Android patent drama.

Alexis Sclamberg: The Real Reason You're Not Living Your Dream ...

If you've read my work or heard me on the radio, you know that I'm crazy about inspiring people to live their dream life. I cringe when people tell me they're doing jobs they hate, or slugging through daily routines that drain their energy and make them miserable. I think you can make any life possible with the right mix of persistence and patience, and I can't wrap my head around even the thought of waking up every morning to a life that's not right for me.

It may be obvious to you that when I ask people who are not living their dream life why they're not living it, they offer up a slew of excuses. It's as though a laundry list of reasons roll off their tongues and out the door. Before I can reply, they've convinced themselves for the umpteenth time that that dream life is unrealistic, impractical, and totally far-fetched. It's the life reserved for their imagination -- not a reality that they have the power to create. Sound familiar?

Excuses are just excuses, though. They're not truths; they're only as real as you make them. They're artificial creations that mask the real fear and doubt lurking underneath your skin.

So to prevent the excuses from holding you back from your dream life for even one more day, I've compiled a list of the top excuses I've heard, and some ways you can bust through each.

When you're done with the list, you'll have nothing left but your dream, and hopefully a lot of refueled inspiration to go for it. You've got the power to make anything happen -- just put one foot in front of the other and take action.

Drumroll, please... the top seven excuses:

Excuse #1: I don't have the money. Consider how much money you actually need and find creative ways to get it. I'm going to guess that you you haven't even spent the time figuring out how much money you need to actualize this dream. Don't compromise down your dream before you even explore it.

Excuse #2: I don't have time. You can make time for the stuff that matters to you. You get to choose whether or not you prioritize your dreams. What are you doing that's a total time-waster? Do you spend three hours a day on Facebook or mindless moments in front of the TV? What can you accomplish more efficiently? What can you outsource to someone else? Rearrange your day and think outside the box. You'll find you have more time than you think.

Excuse #3: I've already started down one path; I can't change direction. Every day you make decisions about how you live your life. Give yourself permission to change direction -- no matter how much time, energy, or money you've already invested in another endeavor, relationship, or job. Life is all about twists and turns -- be open to a new direction.

Excuse #4: I'm too scared. It's natural to be scared of the activities that most excite you. Use fear to move you forward -- follow your fear, don't resist it. Push yourself so you can be proud of yourself.

Excuse #5: People will judge me if I fail. You're giving everybody too much power. Frankly, people care a lot less about what you're doing than you think. You're just a blip on their radar screen. Make the decisions that are right for you. The people who love and care about you will support you; the rest don't matter anyway.

Excuse #6: I'm not _____ enough. Not young enough, smart enough, or good enough? These are just limiting beliefs. Catch yourself when these doubts pop up, and find something positive and encouraging to say about yourself instead.

Excuse #7: I'm not ready yet. If you're waiting to be perfectly ready to pursue your dream, you'll never go for it. We all start one (shaky) step at a time. Don't wait for perfection to move forward, just do it.

STEPHANOPOULOS: He mostly wants it to go away, Mary Matalin. And we're seeing Todd Akin - George thinks he might get out. I got that same sense while I interviewed the congressman this week, but since then he's dug in a couple of times. We have a new poll out this morning. He's now down nine points to Claire McCaskill in the Missouri race he was winning.

MATALIN: George, he may dug in, but he's not going to have a shovel to continuing digging. Because he's not going to have any money. George Will is right. We need to win Missouri. We're going to win Missouri. Ann Wagner is going to end up being our candidate. The party is going to get Ann Wagner in.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So you're just convinced that he's going to get out?

MATALIN: Or we'll run a third party, we'll run a write-in. We can do it. We have the money to do it. We are going to transfer the money. It's not as easy as - but it's a good state for Romney. And we'll get it back.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Diana Krall knows how to pay tribute to Neil Armstrong.

The jazz singer-pianist tenderly played "Fly Me to the Moon" during a Saturday night concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Krall said she once was lucky enough to share a glass of wine with the first man to walk on the moon. The astronaut died Saturday at 82.

Armstrong probably was wishing he didn't have to listen to the pop standard again, Krall said lightly, after gazing toward the night sky.

HBT: Red Sox, Dodgers finalize massive trade

UPDATE: The trade has been announced. The Red Sox have traded Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto and cash considerations to the Dodgers for James Loney, Allen Webster, Ivan De Jesus, Jr. and two players to be named later.

Rubby De La Rosa and Jerry Sands are reportedly the players to be named and will join the Red Sox organization following the season. The Red Sox must wait to acquire De La Rosa and Sands because they didn?t clear waivers this month.

1:32 p.m.: OK, it?s done. For real this time. Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that the deal is official while Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com hears that Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto are already on a plane to Los Angeles. No word on if fried chicken is on the in-flight menu.

11:59 a.m.: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the trade will get done, but that the two sides are waiting for Carl Crawford?s consent paperwork to go through. He has already waived his no-trade clause verbally, so it?s just a formality at this point.

Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston, who has been all over this trade, hears that an an official announcement is expected at some point this afternoon.

10:00 a.m.: So much for that. According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, the mega-deal is not yet official and reports of it being complete are premature. Still sounds like it will get done, but we might have to wait a little while longer.

9:32 a.m. ET: According to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, the nine-player blockbuster trade between the Red Sox and Dodgers is complete. Dan Roche of WBZ is also reporting that the trade is done. Let?s go over the particulars.

The Red Sox are sending first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, right-hander Josh Beckett, outfielder Carl Crawford and infielder Nick Punto to the Dodgers for first baseman James Loney and four minor leaguers. Those prospects are expected to consist of right-handers Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster, first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands and infielder Ivan De Jesus, Jr., though one or more of them could be announced as players to be named later and be sent to Boston after the season. Crawford and Beckett both waived their no-trade clauses in order for the deal to go through.
