Top 7 Tips : ?My Dog is Too Hot?, Keep it Cool. | Dealwagger.com Blog

We know you may have noticed? across the nation it is a HOT. That means we are responsible to take the utmost care of our furry friends to avoid any complications while having a fun time.

Here are our Top 7 Tips on how to avoid overheating and keeping a happy, healthy pet during this heat wave:

1. Keep your pet hydrated.

Different dogs have different needs when battling the heat. Lighter coats have it easier because they don?t absorb as much heat as those with darker coats. Also, overweight dogs are at higher risk for dehydration. Carry a collapsible travel bowl?(<? click there to check it out) which we happen to have on special for $5.99 w/ Free Shipping!??If your dog is big enough to wear a vest, Cesar Milan recommends placing water bottles in a vest, which keeps the dog cooler and also gives the dog a sense of purpose.

2.?Never leave your dog in a parked car.

The car retains more heat than an open area, even if it is in the shade.?One of the most life-threatening mistakes?people can make is to leave a dog in a?vehicle during hot weather. Dogs can?t?perspire, as humans do, to cool themselves?off via evaporation, so they have to pant?to cool themselves. If the air that they are?taking in is too hot, then panting has?little cooling effect and the dog quickly?overheats. Many people think their dog will?be okay if they leave the windows open,?but even with the windows wide open, the?car can quickly become hot enough to cause heatstroke, brain damage, and even death.?Moral of the story: Don?t Do It, leave them home when running errands.?

3. Exercise your dog early in the morning or late at night.

These are the coolest parts of the day. Your walk will be more comfortable for your dog as well as you yourself. Also, don?t push your luck and take your dogs on hikes or anything that requires more serious exertion.

4. Beware of hot surfaces

Surfaces like cement and asphalt could get very hot and burn your dogs pads. You should check the ground yourself with a hand or foot to check on this. Just bring hand sanitizer along! Since dogs actually absorb and release heat through their feet, it could be helpful to buy boots for their feet to protect them if you live in an area where there is only asphalt around and its just really hot. These same boots can protect from ice and snow during winter, too.

5. Watch for Signs of Dehydration

Dogs cool off by panting since they cannot sweat. An overheated dog will drool excessively, will become lethargic, eyes will become bloodshot, and it may appear pale. Cesar reports that ?If you lift its skin, it will take longer than usual for the skin to fall back into place.?

6. Belly-up Cool-downs

When cooling your dog down with water, make sure to put it on their underside/belly area. Since dogs cool from the bottom up, this will be the most effective. You can even let them lay on a damp towel which is guaranteed to be appreciated.

7. Swim & Dig Allllll Day

If you can ease your dog into swimming, or if they already enjoy it, this is an excellent way to stay cool, be active, and bond with your best pal. No access to a pool? Dogs do this instinctually in nature, so don?t be too hard on them if they are just trying to be themselves!
